Naming

Choosing a name… it’s always hard.

Nymphaea Arc-en-ciel

When it comes to waterplants you don’t have to bother about gender, or godmothers and godfathers, but still.  It is a big decision, one that a waterlily will have to carry with her forever.

It seems logical that a hybridizer gives his own name to a plant, but he wouldn’t be a hybridizer if he only had one variety.  And givinig each one the same name, well that might cause some problems.  Perry Dean Slocum used his surname and than put the color or so behind it, like Nymphaea Perry’s Super Red.  Very popular also among waterlily hybridizers is to name it after  beloved ones.

I would know how to call my varieties, what about Nymphaea Davy or Nymphaea Dylan,…  If you are a hybridizer yourself, you might get some inspiration from the following:

  1. the love of your life like Nymphaea Norma Gedye,…
  2. your daughter like Nelumbo Sharon,…
  3. your son like Nymphaea Peter Slocum,…
  4. your mother-in-law like Nymphaea Madame Wilfron Gonnère,…
  5. your grandmother like Nymphaea Alma,…
  6. your best friend like Nymphaea James Brydon,…
  7. your colleague hybridizer like Nymphaea Walter Pagels,…
  8. the daughter of a friend like Nymphaea Joey Tomocik
  9. your favourit spot on this earth like Nymphaea Colorado, Nymphaea Dallas,…
  10. based on the color of the flower like Nymphaea Perry’s Super Red
  11. based on the color of the leaves like Nymphaea Arc-en-Ciel
  12. or maybe just the first name that pops into your head when you see the first flower,  Nymphaea Wow is a very good example of that…

As you see, the possibilities or endless and if you really don’t know what name to choose, Nymphaea Séverine doesn’t exist yet, just a thought…
